Commission for Monterey Bay Aquarium finished!

I’m super excited to be able to share final images and video for my series of Cephalopods commissioned by the Monterey Bay Aquarium!  The pieces are destined for the upcoming exhibit “Tentacles: The Astounding Lives of Octopuses, Squid and Cuttlefishes,” opening April 12, 2014. These pieces will help tell stories about the impacts that pollution, overfishing and habitat destruction have on these animals.  The project has truly been a dream come true for me and I’ll be sure to post images of the pieces once they are installed among real sea creatures in April.  I will also be displaying these pieces briefly at an open house event in my studio Saturday March 15th.  Stay tuned for details to follow.

In the mean time I’ve posted details of each piece individually: Cuttlefish, Octopus, and Nautilus here on my site, and put together a quick video overview of all three (above).  Below is a very cool little video that the Aquarium produced about the making of the pieces as well as a few teaser images of finished pieces:

  • Sigh... I really try to not go to estate sales. But sometimes the draw is too strong. No regrets this weekend though. One of the rarest birds on these hunts are small gearmotors. This haul included 45 brand new tiny Swiss ones! As well as a dozen or so of mixed size and output. This alone will keep me supplied for small sculptures for years. And look at all the other crap too! But seriously, if you hear about resources like this in my area, don't tell me. I don't want to be found under an avalanche of this stuff in my studio, and I'm afraid I can't help myself.
  • Here is the final arrangement for fastening the elk antlers to the machine crank arm (there are two). The real breakthrough for me here is the little ball bearing between the two plates. This means I can fine tune the position of each antler after the machine is assembled. Much easier than the hopeless task of aligning the whole mess perfectly on the first try. Live and learn.
  • Machine for waving antlers around so that they look like beetle mandibles (beetle head sculpture not yet included). This is the result of the sketch in the previous post. The motor was salvaged from a back massager.
  • I almost never draw or sketch. I like to say that if I knew how something was going to turn out beforehand, I'd never have the patience to make it. None the less, sometimes a little visualization is necessary. Like, if you're trying to make a machine that turns a pair of antlers into kinetic beetle mandibles for instance.
  • Hard to believe all this fuss was necessary just to drill two stupid holes. Guess that's just the dark side of working with found / pre-existing elements.
